Join Visual MN at the Minneapolis Photo Center on Thursday, August 25th as we host a roundtable discussion on “Documenting Social Change Today” moderated by Kyndell Harkness, Photo Editor at the Star Tribune.
Visual journalists are tasked to navigate a hurting community in order to tell the complete story — whether it’s a community that continually looses its members to gun violence or the police coming under heightened scrutiny — all while being mindful of the privilege that journalists have. It’s a journalist’s job to help the viewer have a deeper understanding of the struggles each community faces so that there can be meaningful discussions in the hope that it facilitates change. “How do we as journalists cover a story accurately and honestly — still showing up as our authentic selves?” asks moderator Kyndell Harkness. Journalists can find themselves stuck in the middle of the two factions as they work to tell the full story.
Featured guests include Caroline Young – Freelance, Mark Vancleave – Videographer for the Star Tribune, Angela Jimenez – Freelance and Chris Juhn – Freelance.
