2016 Visual MN Conference

It’s that time of year again! We are excited to open registration for our 2016 Annual Conference to be held Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Mpls Photo Center!

Outline of Schedule

Friday, October 28, 2016

  • 6:30pm – 9pm: Conference Kickoff Party! This will include appetizers, drinks, member slide show and, of course, great conversation with your fellow Visual Storytellers. Open to the public and free.
  • 7:30pm – 8:30pm: The Print Swap – Cost: $15 Registration for the Print Swap is now closed – We are bringing back the popular print swap this year! Choose your favorite print to share with a colleague and receive a print in exchange. It’s a fun way to share your work and the stories behind those photos. All prints will be done by West Photo. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this fun event!

  • 8:30am: Registration opens. Breakfast and coffee will be available.
  • 9:30am – 11am: Portfolio Reviews. Current reviewers include:
    • Deb Pastner, Director of Photo/Multimedia, Star Tribune
    • Regina McCombs, Senior Editor for Visual News, Minnesota Public Radio
    • Jeff Harrington, Owner/Executive Director, MPLS Photo Center
    • Jenni Pinkley, Senior Producer/Editor, Multimedia, Star Tribune
  • 9:30am – 5pm:Conference classes take place – including Location Lighting with Carlos Gonzalez, Audio Recording with Luke Harper, Book Publishing with Angela Jimenez and more! There will be a break for lunch that we will provide.
  • 5pm – 6pm: Registration opens for those only attending the Keynote Speaker. There will be appetizers and drinks during this time.
  • 6pm – 8pm: Keynote Speaker Jason Greene, Director of Photography, Blue Chalk Media (More information on Jason below.)

There will be raffle drawings throughout the two days. You will receive one ticket per day for your registration. More tickets will be available to purchase. Raffle items have been graciously donated from Minnesota Public Radio, The Star Tribune, West Photo, Think Tank Photo and elsewhere!

Professional Member and Non-Member rates will increase a week before the Conference. We recommend registering early!

  • Keynote Speaker Only:  $25

Non-Members:

  • Conference Classes and Keynote Speaker:  $100
  • Keynote Speaker Only:  $40

Student Members:

  • Conference Classes and Keynote Speaker:  $40

Student Non-Members: (Includes one-year membership to Visual MN)

More About Our Keynote Speaker:

Jason Greene is an award-winning cinematographer and filmmaker. He received his master’s degree in photography, multimedia and design at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and is currently working as the director of photography at Blue Chalk Media in Portland, Oregon (http://bluechalk.com/).

Jason is passionate about social issues and is dedicated to documenting them through multimedia storytelling through collaborative efforts. He serves on the board for Taking Focus (takingfocus.org), a non-profit organization that was created for visual storytellers by visual storytellers that is dedicated to giving back to the people they document. He also recently completed a documentary entitled 55 Days, which follows a widow who lost her husband while serving in the Middle East and her journey of learning to let go of her loss.
